The BIA (Brevet d’Initiation Aéronautique) is a French national programme that introduces high-school students to aviation: aerodynamics, aircraft systems, weather, navigation, regulation, and aerospace history. I joined the BIA cohort at Lycée Paul-Guérin in Niort during 2016–2017, in partnership with the local Aéro-club de Niort.
My instructor and mentor was Olivier Madec, a private pilot and the BIA course leader at Paul-Guérin. Beyond the classroom, the cohort visited Dassault Aviation’s Mérignac plant on 25 January 2017: assembly lines, flight-test benches, and a long walk through the production halls of the Rafale and Falcon programmes. The visit was covered in a short article on the Aéro-club’s website.
I did not formally certify the BIA exam at the end of the year (it was not my priority that semester), but the programme planted a long-standing curiosity for aerospace and the atmosphere. That same curiosity now powers my Ph.D. work on neural models of atmospheric physics and air quality.

What the programme covered
- Aerodynamics & flight mechanics. Lift, drag, stability, the four forces, basic flight envelopes.
- Aircraft systems. Engines, controls, instruments, structures, from light aircraft to airliners.
- Meteorology & navigation. Reading the sky, basic flight planning, regulation and airspace.
- History & regulation. Aviation pioneers, French aerospace industry, certification frameworks.
- Field visits. Aircraft and gliders at the Aéro-club de Niort, plus the trip to Dassault Aviation in Mérignac for an inside look at how Rafale and Falcon aircraft come together.
